LOSAMEDCHEM
The LOSAMEDCHEM project 'How could the logistics and the safety of the transports of chemicals be improved in the Mediterranean area' was a project financed by the European Commission with funds from the European transnational cooperation programme MED, with the objective of developing the intermodality and safety of chemical goods in the Mediterranean basin. It analysed and aimed to develop the traffic of chemical goods within the Mediterranean basin, with particular emphasis on the security aspects of these goods' flows.
The aims and objectives of the project were the following:
- to promote cooperation between the chemical industrial districts located in the territories included in the project and between the districts themselves and the main ports of reference
- to improve integration between ports and hinterlands through greater use of intermodality, mainly by focusing on rail and river transport
- stimulating and promoting the sharing and transfer of know-how, technologies and skills with particular reference to the safety of such traffic;
- harmonise regulations, procedures and policy in the EU and Mediterranean area, in order to make chemical goods logistics easier, safer and smoother.
The LOSAMEDCHEM project was led by the Province of Novara, one of the main European chemical districts, and involved Chambers of Commerce, Trade Associations, Port Authorities and Universities from Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Slovenia and Greece.
The ports in the project partnership included, in addition to the Port Authority of Genoa, were the port of Koper and the Port Authority of Trieste.
